Chapter 11

A message had arrived as a pulse of blue on the comm array, a single line of Lumen cipher that repeated itself until the ship's outdated systems consented to decode. It was not a voice transmission, not at first, but a packet of directives and embedded biometric signatures that traced their way down every available wire, waking up relays that had lain dormant since the ship's last legitimate commission. In the stutter of decompression, the image of General Kallan materialized, flickering at the periphery of the main display.
