My attention was unexpectedly drawn to the right by a subtle flicker at the periphery of our senses, revealing the sudden appearance of an additional horde, already engaged in a fierce assault by Nyx’s formidable shadow wolves. The pack moved with balletic unity, eight enormous predators streaking through the chaos, fangs and claws tearing through flesh and sending up plumes of red-black ichor. For every demon that tried to swing a weapon, two wolves were already on its back, jaws locked at the throat. The wolves didn’t bleed; they weren’t really corporeal at all, only the pure, elemental hunger of shadow given mass and purpose.
