The village square had been gutted and rebuilt overnight. Where there’d been churned mud and scattered garbage, now there were banners, ropes of fir, and rickety tables that looked ready to kill anyone dumb enough to lean on them. The air smelled of tallow, sweetbread, and the faintly chemical tang of new dye.
