Ralph was mid-sentence with a woman whose voice he’d already forgotten—he thought her name started with Z, but by now the night had compressed every first introduction into one long syllable—when his vision flared white at the edges, then gray, then pinprick. He had just enough warning to grab the doorframe with his left hand, which bought him a single second of upright grace before the rest of him gave out.
