Juniper sat on a wheeled stool at the comm annex’s main terminal, her posture perfect, her pixie cut outlined against the blue cast of dual monitors. The electric streak in her hair was a muted gray tonight, which meant she was running low on whatever neurotransmitter powered her sarcasm. The only sign of life was the quick, birdlike movement of her fingers as they scanned a run of flagged transmission logs. Ralph stood behind and to the side, close enough to watch the lines of code as they pulsed across the screen, not so close that he’d get hit if she threw a fit and spiked the keyboard.
