Gudrun Sigurdardottir’s caravan arrived suddenly and decisively, demanding attention. As the sun set low and red behind the ridge, three carts entered Freydis’s yard. The first two were stacked with barrels, sacks, and bundles lashed in waxed cloth. The last was topped with a trunk and a pair of hissing geese, caged but feral-eyed.
