The ship’s first true silence came five minutes after burn-out—when the klaxons and the hull vibration faded, when the only sound left was the taste of blood in your mouth and the tick of cooling pipes behind the bulkheads. Marcus braced himself against a rung in the corridor and waited for the pressure in his ears to subside.
