Nexus Station was not a place; it was a hypothesis, a statistical event, a standing wave of debt and promise suspended between the civilizations that feared each other just enough to prefer commerce to war. It existed in no nation, acknowledged no law but its own, and even then only on the understanding that exceptions would be made as soon as profit or survival demanded. It rotated on its axis at a rate calculated to induce a fractional dizziness in the human brain, a trick learned from the Vex, who believed a touch of vertigo made clients more pliant.
