Waking was like swimming up through ammonia. The first thing he felt was the taste: chemical and coppery, as if the air itself was burning into his blood. The second was the sound—an arrhythmic beep just above his left ear, and somewhere behind that, the familiar whine of portable medical equipment, the clatter of cots being jostled and the low drone of women in pain, anger, or both.
