At 03:12, the corridor was silent except for the generator hum, a sub-bass note that made the world feel hollowed out and waiting. The ceiling lights were set to night mode, a faint blue wash that leeched all color from the cinderblock and gave every shadow an edge. Ralph lay on his cot, arms folded behind his head, eyes open. He listened to the building: the hiss of climate control, the occasional pop as the ductwork settled, the soft click of something in the walls recalibrating. There was a knock, a single, hard rattle on the door. He was up before he knew it.
