He slid the duffel bag down the corridor. This was supposed to be the safe wing, but even here you could hear the rest of the building grinding out its own insomnia: distant shouts, the whirr of cycling backups, the erratic thump of security doors resetting after each software patch. The door to his new quarters had a sticky keypad and a hinge that sounded like a dying bird. Inside: cot bolted to the wall, metal desk with “LENA 2023” gouged into the top, a flex-arm lamp that flickered every two seconds whether you touched it or not. The air tasted of ozone and recirc’d sweat. Ralph dropped the bag onto the cot, then stood there, listening to the baseline hum.
