Chapter 33

He walked the length of the corridor, ten meters each way, four hundred times. The soles of his shoes wore a scuffed line into the polymer tile. Twice, Mara appeared at the end of the hall, her silhouette caught in the steel-blue lighting, but she never came closer. She watched him walk, then vanished again. After the last circuit, his pulse still hadn’t dropped. He went left, not back to the cell, but to the rec area—a word that, here, just meant “the room with the softest chairs and the least-fucked coffee.”
